Half way to Asia

..is basically what Auckland is… Sushi everywhere, storefronts also in Japanese, the works…The fact that there’s currently a Lantern Festival on doesn’t help the cause. Additionally they’re celebrating the Chinese New Year on the wrong date which is driving me a bit mental…

Anyway, now that I’ve had Jaffa cookies, Scrumpy, Alcoholic Ginger beer, venison, mussels, rosemary mint lamb pies, and copious amounts of coffee and micro brewed cider…I think I’m okay with parting ways with the ‘Canada of the Southern Hemisphere’.

On a side [exciting] note…I got mistaken for being Australian twice and English once last night…my hodgepodge accent lives on! Otherwise the last night in Auckland was pretty sweet… went to heaps of pubs, had a Maori man buy way too many shots then get ragingly angry when I wouldn’t let him cuddle me, swayed to a live cover of Bob marley, Danced shopping cart styles with 40 year olds at some irish pub, found English boys to buy me drinks (the usual), fist pumped pauly-D styles at the 18 year old bar, and had a walk on the wharf with a guy from Ingercarvill (southern most point of south island)…PS I think (as everything else that is forever behind) fist pumping JUSt arrived in Nz…people were a littttttle to jacked up…and my arms are a litttttle too sore today. Ooooh also, we found a great little Mexican place…I think it’s just called Mexican Cafe? in Auckland CBD…west of Queen Street, a few blocks up from the Warf? Anyway, 7 dollar happy hour tacos with rice and salad…WAY better than a take away!

I’ve just booked my flight leaving Bali to Singapore for mid March, so HOPEFULLY I won’t have any troubles getting into the country. Also I got it on Air Asia for 70 dollars including bags/taxes/fees…the travel agent found “a GREAT fare’ for 140. Definitely do your research flying within Asia!

I’m in the process of booking a hotel for the night I arrive, as I get in around 10 pm…then possibly booking (to avoid homelessness) for the Balinese New Year (or something of that nature) on the 10th of March. I might point out that I think I have the best travel itinerary ever…I am chasing both summer and new years celebrations (also in Cambodia for their New Year).

If you have room in your thoughts, think happy NON malaria/denghi getting vibes my way…as much as some good travelleres diarrhea to lose a few lbs could be good, I’d really rather not acquire a relapsing ‘bone jarring flu’.

Riding in Cars with Boys

Really this is a couple dumb anecdotes that I forgot to share…Mom, just remember I’m alive today and forget what you’re about to read.

1…sometime between Christmas and New year in Sydney. I had just put my brand new weekly train pass through the wash. After panicking and sharing my story with the Bondi Junction supervisor so frantically he decided to give me a new one. Pure kindness of the heart…and in my mind… All Australians are SO nice and friendlly….

later that day..more so that night…I’m having a night of escapades in King’s cross…which is sex, drugs and rock and roll Sydney styles…didn’t know that at the time though. Anyway, I worked at 8am the next day, it was 2:30 am. I had been walking back and forth to the bus but forgot first to buy a ticket then my phone. As I was walking back to get my phone a guy pulled over and asked where I was going…’just back to the cross’…asked if I wanted a ride…and “all australians are nice and friendly”-remember…. so sure… so against what all mothers teach their daughters, I got in the car with a stranger…who proceeded ask me if I was working and what my rate was. After asking to get the **** out right away, he refused and drove around for 20 minutes trying to convince me I was pretty enough.

I would like to say that of all the nights I’ve been out I probably looked least like a hooker that night…shorts, a tank, and flip flops…hair by that time in a ponytail…anyway, I got out, got my phone, got to the bus, got home….and got zero sympathy from the boys.

2….maybe 3 days later? we were out in the city at scruffy murphys. once again, work early in the morning. So approaching 3 I decided to ask when the bar closed like a true grandma, his answer: 7ish. As All our friends had coupled off or disappeared I decided I’d suck it up and shell out the 40ish bucks it would cost for a cab home.

Got outside hailed a ‘cab’…hopped in, gave my general address ‘half way between bondi junction and the beach’ and half dozed….15ish minutes later I came to the realization that there was no credic card machine…

“do you have EFTPOS?”….”No, I’m not actually a taxi”…..of course not…just a random unmarked white van. Anyway…he got me to my street where I stood outside Domino’s waiting for him to drive away before stumbling home only beating my roomate that walked by 10 minutes. Bright side, I didn’t die and only ended up paying 10 bucks (all I had) for the ride home….not so bright side…I think that the reverse of ‘3rd time’s the charm’ might just come true…so I am extra afraid/cautious of every vehicle I get in these days….because lezzzbehonest… if that were Thailand, I would not be alive to retell these tales…

And no, I woulnd’t do that at home…yes I was drinking…I know I’m an idiot…and no I won’t do it again.

Jetstar and Cairns

JetStar
They get their own post because in general I found my latest airport experience to be fascinating to say the least.
First, I didn’t get asked for ID…not even once. Not to check in, not at security, not to get on the plane. Convenient? Perhaps…Settling? Far from it.
Second, ‘in-flight entertainment available’ really means pay 10 dollars for an iPad you can play on…and for everyone else, too bad so sad. There isn’t even a shared TV or music.
Third, don’t wait for your free refreshment to kill time. A soft drink, water, coffee, or tea will cost you $3 and pretzel snacks $4.50. I guess I should have taken the free sprinkled chocolates after all.
Bonus: Their flight attendants wear orange blazers…ew.
That is all.

A Sweaty Mess called Cairns…
I don’t think I’ll be working out here because my body has been tricked into always thinking it’s just worked out. Sweat. All. The. Time. Better yet, it’s supposed to get hotter here. November is like our April/May…I will be avoiding Cairns at all cost as soon as I leave a few days from now. As for work there seems to be stuff on Magnetic Island and Airlie beach so I’ll have to check that out, as for now I have 4 more days to get a good bronze on.
As for the creatures of ‘tropical Queensland’ there are flies that pee on you and give you little red spots. There are also fruit bats…NOT fun to discover when trotting home from a Halloween party. And I’ve legitimately been told to stay away from the lagoon because of the crocodiles.
On the theme of the Halloween party… I arrived in Cairns Wednesday morning with the intention of having a lazy lay around day. I was promptly informed that there was a Halloween party happening at the hostel that night and in an attempt to make travel buddies I decided I had to go. Everyone had already started drinking at noon, and costumes were being built. Most of the men went in drag, most of the girls random costumes that were clearly selling for cheap at the local holiday store. 2L of wine and a few glasses of punch later I was speaking to the French at ease and confidently shouting in my newly developed aussie accent. I also won a balloon popping contest with another Canadian girl and face planted trying to pick up a corona case to win a trip to the barrier reef.

On the bright side, Nomads Cairns is a GREAT hostel. Clean and the people are lovely. Huge kitchen which really helps saving funds. SO MANY GERMANS.
